In an Australian first, Hydroflux was today announced as the exclusive representative for a German technology to remove struvite and reduce phosphates in sewage treatment plants while creating a by-product phosphate fertiliser for sale.
The German technology called AirPrex® is an advanced struvite removal and biosolids enhancement process by German cleanteq group CNP Technology and is new to Australian and New Zealand markets.

CNP AirPrex® Sludge Optimisation Process
AirPrex® helps sewage treatment plants configured for bio-P removal. It can successfully remove struvite for on sale as fertiliser but will also reduce phosphorus load returned to the plant by 90 per cent, optimise sludge dewatering performance, reduce polymer consumption, create higher cake solids and reduce a plant’s overall operational expenditure.
“This technology is ideal for municipal sewage treatment plants as it removes struvite, which can block pipes and cause other expensive mechanical issues, without increasing chemical use.
World reserves of phosphorous are diminishing so this process provides a sustainable source of this commodity while also reducing a plant’s OPEX,” said John Koumoukelis, Director of Hydroflux.
CNP Technology of Germany have AirPrex® installations throughout Europe. The technology is most applicable for sewage treatment plants with equivalent population loadings from 20,000 through to 1.5 million.
